On Tuesday, new regulations governing how websites and apps deal with kids went into effect. Read more about the FTC’s revisions to the rules issued under the 1998 Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) in a TechBriefing, a regular series of 4-page policy briefs explaining Internet policy issues in accessible terms.

Learn more about this issue by joining us Monday, July 8 for a livestreamed Techfreedom Capitol HIll briefing on “COPPA: The Past, Present & Future of Children’s Privacy & Media.” The first of two panels will explore the legal and compliance questions raised by the revised rules and the FTC’s attempt to address them in Frequently Asked Questions. How difficult is compliance? Might some aspects of the rules be struck down in court? What First Amendment rights are at stake? This panel will include six distinguished legal experts:

The second panel will explore the policy trade-offs involved in COPPA. Is the law actually helping to protect children? How should we measure COPPA’s success — and costs? How much will the new rules help parents or hurt childrens’ media? Does COPPA burden some sites more than others? How should policymakers address children’s privacy in the future?  These are some of the questions that will be addressed by a panel including:
